An athlete's value to a professional sports organization is primarily based on what he or she can contribute on the court or field. This is commonly perceived as a byproduct of the athlete's physicality.
The National Football League's annual Scouting Combine is an excellent example of the emphasis placed on physical acumen. The "four-day job interview" that occurs each February includes a 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, 3 cone drill and shuttle run. While there is a mental component to the event, it is often downplayed in relation to the physical drills.
