The link between nutrition and weight loss

Two-thirds of the adult population in the Untied States is obese or overweight. For a head count, that’s roughly 78 million adults. For kids, one of five youths ages 2–19 years are also obese.

Being obese/overweight leads to a myriad of health problems. It increases risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and even some cancers. About half of all adults — 117 million people — have one or more of these chronic health conditions. Heart disease is the most common chronic condition, followed by diabetes. Diabetes can start in childhood, and it affects more than 29 million people in the United States, including 11.8 million seniors.

Losing weight and maintaining healthy body weight reduces risk of chronic disease. About one-third of obese/overweight people try to lose weight using a myriad of diet plans, which rarely work. Weight loss programs often fail because dieters are focused on counting calories rather than assuring they meet their daily need for essential nutrients. A healthy weight loss diet includes foods rich in essential nutrients and avoids foods high in salt, sugar, and bad fats. This type of diet promotes satiety, which leads to lower calorie consumption and subsequent weight loss.
